Oplevelsescenter Vestvolden
Dive into an exciting and important piece of Danish history at Vestvolden, which was part of the Copenhagen Fortifications and is a large area filled with exercise trails, museums and military facilities.
Oplevelsescenter Vestvolden is a collective term for the offers and activities you can experience at the fortification. Whether you want to soak up exciting war history museum-style or just want a nice walk in beautiful green surroundings, you're guaranteed to find something to do here.
If you're not afraid of "going underground", you can pay a visit to Ejbybunker, which was originally built as an operations centre for the Copenhagen Air Force on Vestvolden in Rødovre at the beginning of the Cold War. The bunker was put back into use in the mid-1950s as a military area with limited access for the civilian population. Today, the bunker is a museum where you can walk around the underground labyrinthine corridors and explore history with yourself in the lead role through interactive and digital installations.
You can also visit the Artillery Magazine, originally built to store cannons for possible future wars. The current Artillery Magazine is a reconstruction that was built in 1996 according to the original drawings at the original location. The original magazine was an approximately 300 square metre timber construction with room for eight cannons and 3200 projectiles. The building is only open for guided tours and special events, but the area is nevertheless suitable for exploring on your own. Surrounding the Artillery Magazine is "Den historiske vold", where the planting is kept down and beautifully restored. This gives you a sense of what Vestvolden actually looked like when it was in use as a defence.
Vestvolden is a protected area, both because it is an ancient monument, but also for its biological and natural values. It functions as an integrated part of Greater Copenhagen's green areas and is therefore worth a visit, whether you're wearing the historical glasses or not.
