Boutiques and local heroes: An insider's guide to shopping in Frederiksberg

Ask any local, and they’d tell you that Copenhagen’s most underrated destination for shopping is Frederiksberg. Known for its independent boutiques selling local brands and its world-class offering of anything from design to delicacies and fashion.

The neighbourhood’s unique assortment of stores is sure to cater to even the most critical consumer. But where to begin? There are so many ways into Frederiksberg. Quite literally. If you arrive from the city centre, you’re sure to stumble your way onto Værnedamsvej, also known as mini Paris. And for good reason. The street has been voted by global magazine Time Out as the world's 5th coolest street in the world, and it’s packed with small, independent stores run by local owners. From Helges Ost, a French delicacy shop known for its impressive selection of baguettes and cheeses to Wood Wood Life Store, a well-assorted destination for high-end candles, Japanese camping gear and Scandinavian home decor.

Just a few minutes away, lovers of fine jewelry will find themselves mesmerized by the designs of Trine Tuxen, a Danish jewellery designer whose flagship store is placed right in the heart of Gl. Kongevej. Just a few blocks away, Kookoon offers up a unique selection of womenswear by local designers sure to satisfy anyone looking to add some Scandi style to their current wardrobe.

And the shopping is just getting started. Garodkin is the main destination for premium menswear in Frederiksberg. Originally, the store opened its doors back in 1942 in another location in Frederiksberg. The store passed down in generations before shutting its doors in 2018. However, in 2019, Nicolai Eriksen and Gert Nodin re-opened the shop in a new location on Gl. Kongevej. And thus, giving visitors and locals the chance to browse through suits, shoes and shirts of the highest quality right in the heart of the neighbourhood.

It’s essentially a grocery store, but a grocery store like you’ve never seen it before.

Just across the street you’ll find Mr. Larkin. Owned by Texas-born Casey Blond, the store features its own namesake label (designed by Blond herself) and an assortment of highly curated womenswear and jewelry – mixing Southern charm with Scandinavian elegance.

Local heroes in boutique stores

A throughline for the Frederiksberg shopping experience is the fact that in almost any store, you’ll find the local owner. Have a question about the brand? Chances are, the person in front of you owns the brand. The same goes for Auren’s Deli, it’s essentially a grocery store, but a grocery store like you’ve never seen it before. Full of locally sourced vegetables, natural wines as well as an artfully selected assortment of premium canned fish, the space basically looks like a restaurant, a coffee shop and a grocery store rolled into one.

An olive oil to drizzle on a scoop of vanilla ice cream?

Speaking of high-quality produce, Oliviers & Co is widely considered the top choice when shopping for the best olives and olive oil money can buy. If you ever considered olive oil a one-size-fits-all kind of produce, think again. In the store owned by Nina Vestmark and her husband Mikkel Toft Madsen, you’ll find a wide variety of top notch extra virgin olive oil from all the best Southern regions that are sure to please any craving. An olive oil for pasta? No problem. An olive oil to drizzle on a scoop of vanilla ice cream? They have it (if you don’t believe us, go and ask).
