The Butcher at Kultorvet
Also popularly known as the 'organic butcher', which is a well earned nickname for the old butcher's shop on Kultorvet Square. 'Organic Meat is always best' was the slogan used by Jens, the owner, who has sold only organic meat since 1997 from the more than 100-year-old shop. Animal welfare and unique taste were the two main reasons for introducing the organic policy more than ten years ago, before the environmental movement had really caught on in Copenhagen. The shop is one of the last butcher's shops in Denmark, where the sale of meat and the way it is cut up is done the old fashioned way. Also the homemade cold cuts and spreads for the open-faced Danish sandwiches are a popular item. All members of the staff wear bowler hats, which was the traditional butcher headdress.

The ingredients are organic all the way and most of the production is based on spelt. This means bread with it own body and taste, baked on a farm near Sjællands Odde north west of Copenhagen. The newly baked bread is brought to the shops where you can also purchase a large selection of organic juices, dairy products, marmelade, honey, müsli and soya milk.
